Sarah Siddiqui

Sarah is truly a special soul and has the effortless ability of touching her audience to the point of tears…Sarah songs touch upon, love, loss, life, death, drug abuse, messed up relationships (all of the above) unafraid to get brutally honest… let’s just say that this beauty is a survivor. Sarah and her twin sister Zahra were both only 14 yrs old and brother Ali 18 when their father passed away. He was a heart and stroke patient and suffered multiple strokes for 8 years before his death. But music helped Sarah. It all started in the choir program in grade school. Music and writing were very innate for Sarah. She was also raised with a very unique spirituality as oppose to religion. The Siddiqui household included a Spiritual Guru Maitreya. She was born into a family of poets, writers, intellects and philosophers. Her mother is an internationally acclaimed published Poet (famous in the Urdu Literature). Both of Sarah’s parents were university professors and poets. Sarah also studies Health and Society at York University. “I wish that my father and I had a better and happier relationship. I’m not going to say that I’m “over my father’s death” or the suffering that he endured. I believe that death is the only thing that the human brain cannot comprehend. I don’t think that people “get over” a loved ones passing, I think what people learn to do is they learn to cope. I’ve learned to cope and that’s through music and a positive attitude. There’s light at the end of the tunnel…always…that’s my message.” Sarah Siddiqui.

Do you believe in Stars?
Sure, You mean the stars in sky….as far as people iii don’t think everyone is a star …..the ‘humble people’ are usually the real stars.

About your music career, how did it start ? What are the projects you are working on?
I started humming away since I was a toddler. I just knew music was it. I start singing in the school choirs and plays and then start writing my own songs and just dove right now into the music scene.

What about your Profession?
I’m a University student.

Any musical education background?
I’ve trained on classical voice briefly and also studied with more pop/contemporary music teachers. I’ve also a few guitar lesson but basically taught myself guitar and voice.

Tell us about your music equipments?
Right now I own a Cort Guitar. Cort is the company that makes all the larger brand name guitars.

What new stuff and variety would your songs are offering listeners and fans as far as compositions go?
My music is a mixture of folk, pop and well "Sarah Siddiqui" sound. My music is very personal and I write what I know and what I've experienced. If you're looking for something real and well that's all you'll get from listening to my music.

What you prefer more ?money or fame?
I prefer whatever God has planned for me. Not a bad idea to have a bit more money in the bank or more exposure... whatever the scale... I won't know if I prefer it without experiencing it first

Any interesting story u have about your craziest fan?
I had this one 'crazy' fan who fell in love with and wouldn't stop writing and truly believed that we were meant for each other after listening to my CD.
One of my songs talks about never finding that special person and being scared of getting close to someone.
So this 'crazy' fan interpreted it as an invitation...
I was like "Buddy it's just a song... back off!"

Ever face embarrassing moment in performing live?
Singing or playing without having my guitar plugged in or tripping over equipment.

What’s new / unique in your music that makes your music different from other musicians in Pakistan/abroad?
Well what makes me different from artists that are 'in Pakistan' is that "I'm not in Pakistan", I'm in Canada and Canada is my home. The music I make is true to the real folk sound... it is all I know. That's why people in Pakistan are taking notice to my music, it probably doesn't sound like any of the Pakistani Pop artists that are in Pakistan I've never been to Pakistan yet. I only know how to speak English, and all my songs are in English. What makes me stand also is that I 100% wrote, produced and paid for my CD.. and I'm a woman... that's rare! I also feel that what I give to my music is a true original sound and total honesty.

Any details about your upcoming concerts/gigs/shows?
I've got shows lined up here in Toronto, Ontario Canada and a couple more in Buffalo, New York and New York City.

Tell us about ur preparation for live concert?
Well I practice my vocal and guitar exercises... I make sure I have a big meal at least 2 o3 hrs before... drink lot's of tea and hang out with my friends before the show...but right before I go on I need total quiet and alone time.

Do you always perform live or just lip singing?
I never lip sing... lip singing is total bullshit... everything is live.... live playing instruments and singing... I also thing pre-recorded instrumentals and beats is bullshit... "Musicians out there, word of advice....learn how to sing, and learn an instrument.

Who are your musical influences?
Joni Mitchell, Joseph Arthur, Ben Harper, Nine Inch Nails, Sarah Mclachlan..

What image do you think your music conveys?
Real life, real person. Just be yourself.

You r in this field to work as a profession or just as a time pass?
Profession.

What are your long-term career goals?
Just to keep making my records and ultimately tour the world.

Where u perform yet?
I've only played in Canada and the U.S.

What inspires you when composing a song?
Life, things I go through.

What do you think about other artists?
I know more about American Canadian artists. I'd like to see a Pakistani artist not make the typical south asian sound... but go outside the box.

Favorite musicians/ band?
Ben Harper, Sarah Mclachlan, Nine Inch Nails

Favorite songs?
'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails.

Who wrote lyrics of your songs and who is the composer of your songs?
All Me.

Do you think music has the power to effect change?
Sarah: Yes…!

When you are singing on stage live, what goes trough your mind?
Sarah: I zone out and get inside the song.

Any thing interesting about you?
Sarah: When I do recording in the studio i usually eats chocolate and drinks coffee before i sings! Sometimes i eat ice cream before a show... these are things that a vocalist never does! Dairy products are a NO NO! but i got such a sweet tooth... I always says "whatever...it's all psychological... I can't live without my chocolate and ice cream!"

Any message to the new talent who wanna join this field as a profession?
Sarah: If playing music in your room and feeling the instant gratification from writing a song at that moment isn't enough... then don't do it at all.
